WHY I LOVE A LARGE CHURCH?

  1. A large church is Biblical. The first church began with 3,000 members (Acts 2:4 1). It continued to grow until the number of men alone reached 5,000. (Acts 4:4) They met in homes because of the growth while they still met together in the temple courts (Acts 2:46) When the LORD’s hand is on His church, healthy growth occurs (Acts 11:21). Of course, external growth will be according to the size of the city and the receptivity of the people, but the Bible is clear that God’s church is designed to grow internally and externally(Acts 4:4).

  2. A large church can provide many places for fellowship. The first church began with 3,000 members who continued in the apostles teaching and fellowship (Acts 2:42). They also experienced “life on life” contact with maturing believers challenging them to grow. In a large church the opportunities for growth through fellowship are provided through serving, in men/women groups, sports, Bible classes, children, youth ministries and many other places where “life on life” occurs in a Biblical setting.

  3. A large church provides an excellent opportunity for evangelism. There are many avenues and ministries in a large church for evangelism without one being singled out. The mindset of a Christ honoring large church is “it’s about the mission, not me” (Acts 2:4 1, 47, 4:4, 5:14, 9:3 1, 12:24, 13:49, 16:5; 19:20).

  4. A large church provides many places for Christians to serve God and use their gifts. (Acts 6:1-7) Sometimes the myth is that a person isn’t needed in a large church. This isn’t true. A large, tall person still needs an arm or an eye or an ear. The places of service in a large church are so varied that one can test their spiritual gifts at many levels.

  5. A large church is inspirational. There is an energy level that is greater when people are gathered in large groups to pray, sing, worship, and celebrate God. Intimacy occurs in the prayer closet alone, exhortation occurs with others (Heb.10:25). The same critics who used to rail against the crowds going to ball games on Sunday now rail against them going to church on Sundays if they go in great numbers. For me, it’s inspiring to see God’s house filled.

  6. A large Christ honoring church will have a positive spiritual impact on it’s community. The city will know of the church. Christians are to let their lights shine and their good deeds will impact their culture. The greater number of believers doing this, the more we advance His kingdom.

  7. A large Godly church prepares us for heaven! Revelation 7:9 tells us that there stood before God to worship Him a great multitude that no one could count. Now I didn’t say a large church is better than a small church, our church was once small with only 32 people in attendance. I personally treasured those days. But the more devoted we became to the mission in God honoring ways, the more His Word would not return void and New Testament discipleship was evidenced (Acts 6:7). One Sunday morning, a Hindu lady and a Jewish man were baptized in our church and at the conclusion of the service, two Muslim men repented and confessed Jesus as Lord. For me it was a glimpse of heaven. The evidence of life is growth and becoming Christ-like.
